What do we do?

Firstly, we are not someone who comes and rescues you after you've been to the pub! lol.

We are a group dedicated to maintaining the safety and resilience of the village of Beer, in Devon, England.

We do emergency planning and preparation. At the moment we are assembling a bag to contain information etc. which will be useful in an emergency.

In light of the conditions we have been having these past couple of winters, it has highlighted the importance of making sure the rural villages in Devon can cope during harsh weather conditions e.g. snow, when the village may be cut off, even if it’s only for a short period of time.

Also, in other emergencies when it would be helpful for villagers to do whatever we can to make things easier for the emergency services. We can use our local knowledge to give them detailed and potentially important information on the area, buildings, etc.

We can also do various things to prepare for possible emergencies and keep the village as safe as possible when there is not any emergency e.g. home safety.

What can you do?

Volunteer 4x4 owners

We are currently looking for volunteers who own a 4x4 and would be willing to be put on a register of possible contacts in an emergency.

This is most likely to be wanted during snowy conditions like we have had this winter.

Grit bins

If you live near a grit bin could you please keep an eye on it and if you see that it is empty please report this to DCC at the contact number given on the inside of the lid of the bin.

Grab Bag

Martin will supply a bag to Nigel to keep in the Post Office as a start.

Trevor will supply the contacts list and we can get keys etc to build up the kit.

Regarding First Aid kit Trevor undertook to ask the businesses if they would pool their kits in an emergency.

The Chalet System

The 'chalet' system used to by the emergency services when assessing an incident.

  • Casualties- the number and type
  • Hazards- any particular ones
  • Access- in & out
  • Location - of incident
  • Emergency services- have deployed and are required
  • Type- of incident
  • Start a log.

Note: They don't go into one of the holiday chalets to do this!
